Finding out about Fairtrade

Today in Geography, we learned about the importance of Fairtrade.

We watched a video which identified the main people involved in the ‘banana journey’ and then decided, out of the 30p (which is how much 1 banana costs), how much each person involved should get.

We had some very strong opinions about this!DSCF0270 DSCF0271 DSCF0273

We used our collaboration skills to work effectively as a group.

Banana farmers only receive 1p out of the 30p it costs to buy a banana!

We discussed how organisations such as Fairtrade ensure that people get paid fairly for the work they do.

“After having discussed the importance of Fairtrade, I now feel that the farmers should get more money, because they work so hard every day; if farmers did not work, I wouldn’t be eating my dinner tonight! Banana workers should also be paid fairly otherwise they wouldn’t  have enough money for food and for their children’s education. Although the importer and the supermarket have to pay expenses (such as advertisement and licensing fees), banana workers have to work long and hard hours every day. Fairtrade helps farmers who don’t have enough money, so they make sure they get a fair amount for what they do.”
